Introduction to Road Safety for Professionals

Road safety is a discipline that demands both technical knowledge and practical judgement. This course — developed by the Australasian College of Road Safety — provides a structured foundation for professionals who are new to road safety or looking to formalise their understanding of the field.

Whether you’re joining a transport agency, a local council, an engineering consultancy or an advocacy organisation, this course gives you the language, frameworks and evidence base to contribute with confidence from day one.

What you’ll learn

The course covers the core principles of road safety practice in an Australasian context, including:

  • The Safe System approach and how it shapes policy and infrastructure decisions
  • Key risk factors speed, impairment, distraction, fatigue and road environment
  • How road safety data is collected, interpreted and used
  • The roles of different agencies, levels of government and the private sector
  • Practical frameworks for identifying and addressing road safety problems

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for professionals entering the road safety field and those in adjacent roles — engineering, planning, public health, emergency services, local government — who want a grounded understanding of how road safety works in practice. It is also suitable for advocates and community representatives engaging with road safety issues for the first time.

How it works

The course is delivered through Reach 360, an online learning platform. Once you purchase access, you’ll receive a separate invitation email from Reach 360 to set up your training account. The course is self-paced work through it at a time that suits you.

Course Access Pricing

Pricing is tiered by World Bank income classification to ensure the course is accessible to road safety professionals across the globe. Member pricing is available to all current ACRS members.

If you’re not yet a member, joining ACRS before purchasing course access is worth considering — the membership discount more than offsets the membership fee at most tiers, and you’ll gain access to the broader ACRS community, events and resources.
